Jean Baptiste Charles Dancla, born on 19 December 1817 in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, was a violinist as well as a composer. He received his first violin lessons in his home town, but at the young age of nine the violinist Pierre Rode heard him playing in Bordeaux, who was so impressed that he sent a letter of recommendation to Pierre Baillot, Luigi Cherubini and Rodolphe Kreutzer. Dancla thus became a student at the Paris Conservatory with Baillot for violin and with the opera composer Jacques Fromental Halévy for composition. Influential personalities in his musical life were Niccolò Paganini, whom he heard live in 1830, and Henri Vieuxtemps. In 1835 he was solo violinist at the Paris Opera, shortly afterwards he was hired as concertmaster at the „Concerts du Conservatoire“. In 1857 he was appointed professor at the Paris Conservatoire, where he taught successfully for more than 35 years – from this period emerge the many etudes and teaching works for violin, from which teaching continues to this day. He also composed numerous violin concertos, string quartets, trios, duos and many other instrumentations. He died on 10 October 1907 in Tunis. In his possession were four Stradivarius violins, which later received the nickname „Dancla“.
